HCC is the second-largest community college in the country. More than 1.5 million people have taken HCC classes since the college's inception in 1971, and more than 70,000 students enroll each semester. These students reflect Houston's rich diversity, with 29.9% coming from Hispanic backgrounds, 31.6% African-American, 16.7% white, 9.8% Asian, and 12% from other backgrounds. Another 8% are students visiting from around the world, giving HCC one of the nation's largest international student bodies for a community college. .
